For the next week or so, we’ll allow downloads of Michael R. Warren’s latest story – The Infrared Dead.

Mambo Ramirez, Metro City’s most inept private detective, is on the job again. After a chance encounter with an old high school classmate, the well-endowed and sexually voracious Meryl Shepard, Mambo is hurled into a landscape filled with dark and sinister forces.

Once the investigation begins, Mambo, along with his trusty sidekick, Floyd Barton, finds himself dealing with channeled alien spirits, a dysfunctional and fate-driven Mexican car, a mysterious sacred Hopi pot, a shady Bigfoot hunter, and a media critic infatuated with sixties boy bands. This case may be Mambo’s biggest challenge. But challenges are nothing new to Mambo, who suffers from seizure disorder – and an inability to form a coherent investigative plan.

Questions abound: Has Dr. Zorba’s new therapeutic approach finally put a brake on Floyd’s habit of streaking nude down the roads of Metro City? Will Mambo succumb to Meryl’s enticing charms? And what is Floyd doing running around in a rumpled sailor’s uniform?

With the help of fate, Tippy Toes the cat, Floyd, and a large red brick, will Mambo solve the secrets of The Infrared Dead? Nobody knows – least of all Mambo.

EBooks sell, but they have to be good eBooks. British author Stephen Leather has been a published writer for 25-years. He says “the vast majority of self-published eBooks are bad. Worse than bad. Awful. There, I’ve said it.”

Amazon, Smashwords, Barnes and Noble, etc., have no quality standards. Anyone can publish anything. Luckily, what Leather thinks is bad can be fixed. He goes on -
By “bad” I don’t just been badly formatted or lacking originality. I mean badly written. Bad punctuation. Clichéd descriptions. Clunky dialogue. And here’s the thing. When I hear “Indie” writers talking about their books, all they seem to talk about is how they go about marketing their work. How they blog, how they work their Facebook contacts, how they post on the forums. I never hear them talking about how they want to improve their craft. For most of the ones I come across it’s all about the selling. I get emails all the time from “Indie” writers asking me what the secret is to selling a lot of eBooks. I don’t get any asking how they can become better writers.

I can help you with those things. I spend a quarter century as a journalist and newsroom manager. As such, I copy edited tens of thousands of scripts written by scores of reporters. You can get the same service from me. I’ll proofread your book, check punctuation and spelling, look for bad dialog and descriptions, look for logical inconsistencies, etc.

Email me, or telephone at the number in the sidebar on the left.

Stephen Leather’s book “Nightfall” is available at Amazon. It begins as a police procedural and turns into a horror novel. A good read.

I’ll convert your book to Kindle and Nook formats while you spend your valuable time writing. Amazon reports it now sells more eBooks than paper books.

“Customers are now choosing Kindle books more often than print books. We had high hopes that this would happen eventually, but we never imagined it would happen this quickly – we’ve been selling print books for 15 years and Kindle books for less than four years,” said Jeff Bezos, Founder and CEO, Amazon.com, in a statement.

For every 100 traditional books, Amazon says it now sells 105 Kindle downloads.

Barnes and Noble is providing new competition, too. The Nook Color received a major upgrade in April 2011, that makes it, in effect, a Tablet – all at about half the cost of an iPad. While the Kindle is solely a book reader (and mp3 player) and has a black and white display, the Nook Color shows off your book in full color, plays videos, connects to the web, and paves the way for enhanced eBooks – those with all sorts of multimedia included with the book.

It’s true that both Amazon and Barnes and Noble provide methods to upload your book to their sites. They even provide a way to upload Microsoft Word files. But your book deserves better. EBook readers, such as the Kindle and Nook, use code to display your words, much like the code used by web browsers. By including the proper code, your book can be properly divided into chapters, have lines properly justified, have a complete Table of Contents (and an index if you’d like), and on the Nook, have color.

You, as an author, need to spend your time on what you love – creating books. Let me take care of the technical issues – writing the code and formatting the eBook.

How long does it take, and what does it cost? It depends on just what you need and what you have. For instance, a Microsoft Word file is much easier for me to work with than a .pdf you’ve received from your publisher. But both can be converted. If needed, I’ll also help you set up the accounts at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other sites, and help you upload the actual files. Additionally, I’ll send you files in both formats so that you can sell your book directly on your own website.

Telephone me, or send an email, to start the process. The number and address are in the sidebar to the left.
